Gai Jatra is a traditional festival celebrated in Nepal, particularly by the Newar community in the Kathmandu Valley. The festival usually takes place in August, during the Nepali month of Bhadra.
Gai Jatra is a festival of cows. The word "Gai" means cow, and "Jatra" means festival in Nepali. The festival is observed to commemorate the death of loved ones and is a way for people to come to terms with the loss of family members. It is believed that the cows guide the souls of the deceased to the afterlife.
Families who have lost a loved one in the past year participate in processions, leading a cow or, if a cow is unavailable, a young boy dressed as a cow. This procession symbolizes the jour...
